Our visitors have gone

Granny, Grandpa and kids
Originally uploaded by Groovy Biscuits.
Alan's parents went home today after visiting us for a week. I think they enjoyed themselves and fortunately the weather was ok for them. When I say ok, I mean it was dry and mild but probably not as mild as Glasgow but hey you can't have everything.

This picture was taken on Sunday when Alan and the kids took them up Mount Ulriken on the cable car which is just behind our house. It's the highest of the 7 mountains surrounding Bergen which explains why I didn't go!!!

Anyway the kids enjoyed seeing their grandparents and look forward to the next set of visitors which will probably be Nana and Papa in November.

Thirsty work being a fire chief!

Happy Birthday to Me!

Hamish
Originally uploaded by Groovy Biscuits.
Hello all, Hamish here. Now that I'm a big boy who's 2, mummy said I can do a post whatever that is. So I picked out a photo of me and will tell you my news.

Well today it's my birthday and I'm 2 years old. I had a lovely lie-in this morning until 8.30am then got up and opened my presents.

I got sooooo much stuff it was like Christmas. I got a trike, a tractor, loads of cars, clothes, Thomas the Tank Engine pyjamas and book and a new fireman hat. I think there's more stuff but I just can't remember it all!

Granny and Grandpa came all the way from Glasgow to see me on my birthday which was great as we don't get many visitors here apart from Mummy's new friends.

We had a big breakfast this morning where I ate loads of stuff like Cheerios, cinnamon buns, toast and brunost which mummy says is Norwegian brown cheese and it's made from goats milk. Yummy!!! Then we all went on the bus into town because daddy's car doesn't fit us all in - I think he needs a new car! Maybe a VW Touran or Zafira with 7 seats.

Then mummy and daddy went out to get a Vietnamese take-away for dinner. I'm quite fond of king prawns and rice with soy sauce! And then the best bit...

Mummy made a chocolate cake for my birthday and decorated it with chocolate icing and sweets. And there was a candle on it which I got to blow out. It was so nice, I was allowed 3 pieces!

Anyway I'd better go as mum is hassling me to go to bed but I'm just too busy playing with my toys.

Ciao for now!

Lots of food and drink to be had!

Hello all. Here's an update of the past weekend's events. I went out on Friday night with the mum's from school. A few of us went to Ziela's house first for drinks and got fairly plastered before we even got to the restaurant! I was drinking Jaegermeister - how nice is that!

So we arrived at the restaurant (20 minutes late) and had a beautiful Singaporean meal. There were 11 of us so it was a lot of fun.

Then after the meal, a few of us went on to a nightclub. Apart from the crap music it was a lot of fun. Michelle got so drunk she felt the need to flash her breasts every 2 minutes on the dancefloor. Then she peed in the bushes outside before eating a cheeseburger that had dropped on the floor. She was eventually bundled into a taxi and taken home!

So I was nursing a hangover on Saturday but suprisingly not as bad as I thought it would be! Still managed to go to IKEA with Alan and the kids.

On Sunday we were invited to John and Bernice's house for Sunday lunch. It was fantastic. It was like lunch at my mum's. Chicken, roast potatoes, veg and all the trimmings followed by fresh fruit flan with cream. YUM!

Yesterday I had Jamie, Ziela and Michelle round for coffee in the morning before going into town to shop. Had chinese for lunch (cheap lunch menu) then we all headed to the school to pick up the kids. Michelle has a boy Mattias who's in Heather's class and Sanna who's 13 months. Jamie has Emma who's in Heather's class, Daniel who's in pre-school and Amanda who's just a baby. Ziela has Hannah who's in grade 1 but only 2 months older than Heather, Nadia who's in pre-school and Zara who's 2 days older than Hamish and is great friends with him! She likes to steal his toys!

Anyway, staying at home today to get the washing done in preparation for Alan's parents coming tomorrow.

Everyone!

Life's just one long lunch!

Well what's been happening over the past week or so. I've been seeing quite a lot of the mums from school. We had a coffee morning the other week where it was a chance to meet all the mums from Kindergarten (Heather's class) and Care Bears (3 year olds) for coffee after we dropped them off at school. It was nice to meet everyone properly and there are loads of mums with younger children so Hamish was certainly not bored.

Then last Wednesday one of the mum's Ziela invited some of us over to her house for lunch. She made a fantastic chicken and egg Singaporean curry (she's from Singapore!) with fragrant rice and pickled spiced vegetables. Again there were loads of kids to keep Hamish amused.

Me and Ziela and her sister-in-law Hilda went out on Friday night. We started off at hers for drinks first (the Norwegians call it 'foreplay'!!!) then we got a taxi into town to a nightclub. WELL there's an experience. Basically the music in Norway sucks so therefore the dance music played in the club also sucks! They're big into salsa and europop crap. They love Shakira (even though the don't understand Spanish). Ok so the music is shit therefore they CAN'T DANCE!!! All the women dance like they've got a 6ft wooden pole stuck up their backsides! And what's more, they all 'swing'. It's like dancing with a partner, you know like ballroom type dancing. They do this to ALL music, even Gwen Stefani, Madonna, Men at Work and anything they play in the club. VERY VERY STRANGE!!!

Didn't do much on Saturday except nurse my hangover and feel depressed about having no money - 2 beers and a Bacardi Breezer cost £28!!!

Today we had some people over for lunch. John and his wife Bernice. John's a consultant for Hydro, the company Alan works for. He and his wife have been in Bergen for a couple of years and are moving back to the UK in a few weeks when John retires. So we had a lovely Sunday lunch 'British style' with paté to start then roast beef, roast spuds, veg, etc then sticky toffee pudding with toffee sauce and cream to finish. Alan is downstairs sleeping it off on the recliner chair!!! May have had something to do with the 3 bottles of red wine we drank too!

Anyway not much more to tell. Heather is off school tomorrow (staff planning day) so we're meeting some of the mums at the soft play in the morning.

Will post some photos once I can find the cable for Alan's camera!

Enjoying our new life

Hamish-bergen
Originally uploaded by Groovy Biscuits.
Well folks, it's been a long time since my last proper post as we've been frantically trying to settle into our new life here in Bergen.

So much has happened in the past few weeks I couldn't possibly report all of it so here's a kind of condensed version...

Arrive safely after staying an extra week in the UK to tie up loose ends, etc. We stayed in a hotel for a couple of nights while we waited for our furniture to arrive from the ship.

Within a week of being here, Heather had made friends with the neighbours kids who are all Norwegian! Fortunately they learn english at age 6 so some of them could speak to her. Didn't stop her though. She managed to ride her bike down the hill and into a wall, breaking her thumb in the process!

The first few weeks were just spent unpacking and moving in. We also had to get used to the nightmare prices here! £9 for a vodka and lime! Also the food is different, the cheese is sooooo bland, nice...but bland. It's like Jarlsberg - rubbery with no flavour. Milk too - there are about a million different types ranging from fat free to soya to lactose free to whole milk. They love yoghurt here too and have it on their cereal in the morning.

Heather started her new school a couple of weeks ago and seems to be enjoying it. Her friends are from all over the place - Iceland, Germany, Holland, Japan, Singapore and England. I've also become quite friendly with the mums here too. They're all so nice and in a similar situation to me. I thought they'd all be 'oil wives' but they're not. Many of their husbands are doctors for some reason and a few are oilmen as expected.

Hamish loves his new home and being with me all day. He has a new 'big boy' bed we bought from IKEA when we first arrived. His room has all his toys in and a lovely view of the mountains. Although he seems to prefer playing in Heather's ENORMOUS room more. As Alan has the car at work, Hamish and I get the bus every afternoon to collect Heather from school so that's an adventure for the wee man.

Alan is enjoying his job too and it looks like he'll do well there which is a bonus. We had our first night out at the weekend without the kids. We had a couple of girls babysit and we went out with his work for a meal then onto one of the guys boats which was moored in the harbour then onto a big music festival in the Grieghalen (Grieg Hall) in the centre of Bergen. It was to celebrate 100 years of Hydro (Norway's big energy company) and they had organised loads of bands to play. There was jazz, swing, classical, DJ and the highlight was the guy from Roxette and his new band (ok they were pants!). They had a similar event in Oslo too and the main attraction was A-Ha!!!

Got lots more things coming up too, got a lunch with the mums from school then a girlie night out next week, the school parents evening, Heather starting ballet classes, got a couple coming for lunch on Sunday from Alan's work. It's all just never ending social life!

Anyway must go as I'm up early tomorrow. Will try to keep blog updated from now on. Now that our wireless broadband is working - oooo I'm sooooo clever :)
